No Apology from the Sovereign Bodies Series

I’ve been working for years on a project that confronts menstrual stigma through unflinching, intimate imagery that reclaims blood as evidence of autonomy rather than shame. The series challenges cultural discomfort, interrogates control over women’s bodies, and insists on normalization as an act of resistance and self-determined power. By presenting images that may be shocking to view, the result may be that the notion of ordinary menstruation will enter the realm of normal. I’ve decided to call this series Sovereign Bodies.

The model is Natalie, someone I’ve had the privilege of working with many times. Some time back I was asked what I specialized in with my photography. What leap into my head was “the perversity of humanity.” Natalie and I always seemed to be of the same mind with that theme.
